Friends of the Art Museum looking for volunteers

The Friends of the Art Museum are looking for proactive, energetic volunteers who would like to participate in organising and developing programmes and fund-raising events that will help raise the profile of the Friends and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum.

The Art Museum celebrated 60 years in 2016 and is home to a comprehensive collection of South African Art and Craft, specialising in the art of the Eastern Cape Province. The Art Museum offers free access to visitors. The public are invited to better understand and appreciate the collection through a diverse range of exhibitions and programmes, including fun, interactive activities for the entire family such as guided tours, holiday workshops, lectures, and other entertainments.

The Museum relies on the assistance of the non-profit organization, the Friends of the Art Museum, for community support.

We are looking for people who are able to help with basic assistance at events such as serving refreshments and welcoming people to the Museum. We are also looking for art or education professionals who would be interested in running guided tours of current exhibitions and assisting or running art and community workshops in conjunction with the Museum professional staff. Writers and editors are also needed to assist with news articles.

Friends are an important fund-raiser for the Museum. The Friends are looking for people to assist with fund-raising events. Money raised in the past has been used to assist with the purchase of artworks for the collection, to fund museum visits for underprivileged communities and to run exhibitions and competitions to promote local artists.

Anyone who is interested in their community and would like to help us raise the profile of the Friends, the Art Museum and Eastern Cape art in general is invited to attend a community meeting to discuss being involved with the Friends organization and to be a volunteer at the Art Museum.
